June 23rd – Travel Day!

To the airport! At 3:30am.

I don‘t remember the last time I got up at 2am for anything. Today I just happen to have to get up, because there’s a taxi on it’s way. I can probably count on one hand, the few times I’ve been to an airport. The idea of going there always stresses me out because customs is never simple and straightforward when you have a disability.

I ordered a sunflower cord a couple months ago. Along with a card I could hang on it that states I’m Deafblind and have nut allergies. I didn’t realise back then, that this would be the end of my stressful airport visits. Never have I ever been helped so much during an airport visit. And it’s not that staff have ever been unhelpful, mean or rude. I’ve had assistance many times and always been helped efficiently. But the sunflower cord… I felt like a VIP and I hadn’t even booked assistance! i’ll admit I felt embarassed to wear it. I’ve learned that embarassment isn’t necessary though. I’ll definitely be using it again!

I went to Greece two years ago, but flew with a different company, later in the day and it was a direct flight. This time we would stop at Samos. Where there’s a very short landing strip that concerned me. Turns out that landing strip makes the whole experience feel like a rollercoaster. The G force created when the pilot put the brakes on, was insanely thrilling. The landing in Mytilini was a little less thrilling. Winds forced the plane to land with a thump that my hyper mobile body didn’t enjoy. Luckily the hot weather that greeted us as we got off the plane, briskly fixed any physical complaints.

I used the transfer bus for the first time. A chatty tour guide who told us everything from how to set up roaming on our phones, to how many sharp corners the bus was about to take, would have been eventful enough. Add in a passenger who’s stomach did not want to stay firmly seated in the cavety it lived in, and you’ve got a recipe for a very memorable experience.

We stayed in Villa Vicky in Petra this time. A cute building with several appartments a terrace, swimming pool and incredibly friendly owners who had stocked our fridge with water. Thsnk you! I really needed that cold drink.

After grabbing a snack in the village – which totally wasn’t a crepe topped with ice cream – getting groceries and heading back to our appartment where we unpacked and rested, we went out for dinner. Two lovely pasta meals. I had forgotten that in Greece, you’re often served a meal that’s big enough for three people to share. Yet so tasty that you eat until you’re ready to burst.

The perfect ending to a great travel day and an awesome meal, is the pretty sunset that mother nature provided. Her promise to us that this week is going to be absolutely unforgettably incredible.
